How to Prepare Your Dog for a Professional Photo Session
Let’s be honest — your dog is already the most photogenic creature in any room. But there’s a big difference between a blurry phone snap and a gorgeous, frame-worthy portrait that captures your pup’s one-of-a-kind personality. The secret? A little preparation goes a long way. Whether your furry best friend is a cool-as-a-cucumber Labrador or a “what’s that?!” Terrier mix, these tips will help make your Lake Oconee dog photo session smooth, fun, and full of tail wags.
1. Burn Off That Zoomie Energy (But Not Too Much!)
A well-exercised dog is a focused dog. About an hour before your session, take your pup for a good walk or a quick play session in the yard. This helps them settle into the calm, “I’m ready for my close-up” energy we’re looking for.
Pro tip: Don’t overdo it! An exhausted dog won’t have those bright, alert eyes that make for truly stunning photos. We want “happily tired,” not “please carry me.”
2. Bring the Good Stuff: High-Value Treats
Think of treats as your dog’s paycheck for a job well done. During your session, I’ll use treats to capture attention, reward great sits, and coax out those adorable head tilts. But not all treats are created equal!
Bring your dog’s absolute favorites — the ones they’d do backflips for. Great options include:
- Small, soft pieces of chicken, cheese, or hot dog
- Store-bought training treats (soft, not crunchy — less crumb mess on that gorgeous coat!)
- Whatever your dog goes absolutely bonkers for
3. Groom Your Pup (But Skip the Fancy Spa Day)
A clean, brushed dog photographs beautifully. Give your pup a bath a day or two before the session so their coat is fresh and fluffy — but not so freshly groomed that they’re still stressed from the experience. A light brush-out the morning of the shoot to remove any loose fur and tangles is perfect.
A word of caution: Skip the heavy perfumes or grooming sprays. They can distract your dog (and occasionally your photographer!) and may affect how your pup smells — which, believe it or not, affects how relaxed they feel during the shoot.
4. Pack a “Dog Session” Bag
Think of it like packing for a toddler — except your toddler has four legs and zero concept of personal space. Here’s what to bring to your Lake Oconee session:
- High-value treats (see above!)
- A favorite toy or two — great for getting ears up and eyes bright
- A water bowl and fresh water (especially for outdoor summer sessions — it’s Georgia, y’all)
- A towel for muddy paws or unexpected lake splashes
- Any medication or calming aids your dog uses regularly
- Extra poop bags, because we love our dogs but we’re also responsible adults
5. Let Your Dog Be Themselves
Here’s the biggest secret of all: the best dog photos aren’t posed. They’re real moments — the goofy tongue-out grin, the mid-leap blur of joy, the soulful eyes staring up at you like you’re the greatest human who ever lived. (Spoiler: to them, you are.)
Don’t stress if your dog won’t sit still or is more interested in sniffing every blade of grass than looking at the camera. That’s personality — and personality makes for incredible photos. I’ve worked with every type of dog imaginable, and the ones who “won’t cooperate” often end up with the most memorable shots.
6. Choose the Right Time of Day
The golden hours — just after sunrise or the hour or two before sunset — are when the Lake Oconee light is pure magic. It’s soft, warm, and flattering for both dogs and their humans. Midday sun tends to create harsh shadows and squinty eyes (even on dogs!).
When we book your session, we’ll plan around the best light for your location, whether that’s a lakeside spot, a shady trail, or the rolling greens of the Reynolds area.
